I'm a professional trombonist, composer, and music teacher in Miami, Florida who is dedicated to the study of music. I am a lecturer in the University of Miami's jazz and studio music program, where I have taught music theory, ear-training, and jazz ensembles. I also teach Saturday music theory classes to students ages 7-18 at a local community arts program. In 2000, I left medical school to pursue music and have never regretted the decision!  I went on to receive my bachelor's in 2004 and master's in 2012, both in instrumental music education.  I recently relocated to South Tampa after being a full time 4th-8th band director for 10 years in Chicago.  I also taught kindergarten music and K-3rd group piano.  I have been teaching private lessons on all instruments for 13 years, with an average of 10 students per week in my studio. Much of this depends on where the student is in their learning progression--if they are just starting out, then I will focus on the fundamentals of good trombone playing, and work with the basic books like Arban's methods for Trombone. I also have used the Hal Leonard series. But as soon as possible, I will move the student into both listening and playing assignments, starting with artists whose transcriptions are more accessible for both range and technique: Curtis Fuller (including transcriptions I created in college, which are really amazing for students), Hal Leonard's JJ Johnson collection, my own recordings and transcriptions, and Etudes for Jazz from Mike Carubia Jack Gale. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage my students by setting realistic goals and proving homework after each lesson to perfect for the next lesson.
