I also believe modeling on the instrument being taught for the student can be a way for students to understand the goals they are trying to achieve. For beginners, I typically begin out of a method book, but I also use studies and etudes that I have developed on my own in the course of my teaching career. Throughout the learning process, I engage the student with real music to build listening skills, and teach concepts like tone, phrasing, and expression.
