My teaching experience has grown tremendously since being a teacher's assistant when I was in high school. I have been consistently involved with teacher music since my graduation from high school in 2007. In the Fort Wayne, IN area, I have worked with marching, jazz, and concert bands with multiple middle and high schools. I also have experience teaching smaller ensembles and private lessons. I am a current student at Ball State University studying to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Instrumental/General Music Education with an add-on in Vocal Education. My method depends on the student. Some need book work, some need to just be one with their instrument, and some need to listen and just admire some of the great players. I have a large amount of books I highly recommend of different techniques and musical challenges that I will often use, but I will also put the books away and work on the instrument itself. Every so often, I find it helpful to put the instrument away completely and to just listen to whatever great recording is out there, for listening is the best teacher. Read More

Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions.
