I am a passionate and motivated teacher of of trumpet and jazz improvisation. I have contributed articles on jazz studies and trumpet fundamentals for the International Trumpet Guild Journal. I taught my first trombone lessons when I was still in high school, and I've always felt a strong connection to teaching (my parents are teachers too). When I was getting my masters, I began teaching beginning brass classes at local elementary schools, and this expanded into several elementary band classes upon graduation. I received my B.M.E. in Music Education from Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama, where I co-founded Steel Tuba/Euphonium Quartet. I received myM.M. in Euphonium Performance from The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. There I was a member of the award winning Alabama Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble and the Alabama Wind Ensemble. For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time.
