For beginning students depending on the instrument of choice, I use: (In no particular order) Standard of Excellence for Band Instruments, consistent with school best practice methods Piano Adventures by Nancy and Randall Faber, for consistency and technique development as well as decent solo repertoire for recitals Hal Leonard's Complete Guitar Course or Alfred, both are good sources. High school students will work out of the Blue Standards of Excellence book for their freshman and sophomore year; along with a more advanced packet of warm up and scale exercises that I received from the ASU clarinet studio and my current clarinet professor Jeff Quamo. Junior year and senior year students will be expected to know at least 80% of the circle of 5ths and they'll begin to start playing etudes out of the Rose Etude book along with studying farther into the warm-up and practice packet. My beginning students usually start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements, Accents on Achievements, Do It Play In Band, and much more. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests. I'm a multi-instrumentalist who loves making music with other people. Making music is a fundamental human experience, and too many people feel that it is out of reach for them, or that the only way to participate in music-making is to play in a band or orchestra. I fully believe that there are many valid ways of learning and playing music, as well as calling yourself a musician. My journey has not been typical for a musician: after a lifetime of casual music-making, I decided at the age of 43 to go back to school for a degree in Music Education from The University of Arizona.
