I am a music educator located in Winnebago County who loves to work with someone to find their own love and brand of music making. I have experience in may different musical styles, some highlights include many years in musical theater, jazz ensembles as a singer and trombonist, and years of classical lessons for voice and piano. I play in a wide variety of diverse musical groups on various instruments. I have performed with orchestras, big bands, and jazz combos as well as funk, hip hop, and even metal bands, all at a professional level. Although trombone is my main instrument, it has given me the solid foundation to play euphonium and tuba at a high level as well. When working in private lessons, I work with each student to set goals, both long and short term. I then assume the role of a guide whenever possible, rather than an authoritarian figure, so that sudents can discover concepts for themselves vs. having the information given to them. When students discover the concepts for themselves, they tend to understand them much better because they have learned them through practical use. Read More

While I try to follow a mostly K12 standard structure to my private lessons at the end of the day I will be tailoring my instruction to my students wants and needs. I like to set attainable weekly goals with my students in regards to technique and style that will be implemented via exercises, scales and into our repertoire. I'm a firm believer in taking a student where they are and building off of their interests. Finding what a student is interested in and using that as a starting point is a part of my teaching approach. At the same time, there are some things that are critical to be taught at every level that should be incorporated on some level so there's a holistic and balanced education. I find a combination of fundamental skills, scales, music theory, some history, critical thinking and analysis combined with whatever solo or individual study from school or other sources. Read More
