For complete beginners I use the usual method books used in the public schools.  As I get to know the student I tailor the lessons to their skill level and personality to teach the fundamentals.  More intermediate students I look at what they do well and areas they need to work on such as embouchure or breathing technique.  I teach theary and make sure the student learns how to read music.  More advanced students I will teach repertoire and advanced books such as Arban's Mehod book.  I will always make sure the fundamentals are taught regardless of the skill level. I focus on a skills based learning regimen. I often start beginners out without using a book, just learning to make the instrument perform before we add the complexities of music notation to the mix. With more advanced students I work on the small details of mastering the instrument, and translate that into performance. With a teacher-mom, I believe my teaching experience started as soon as I could wrangle the attention of my little sister or stuffed animals. Officially I did some tutoring and a pre-teacher program in high school, along with some volunteering at after school programs. I also tutored and taught private lessons while in college.
