I began teaching privately in my sophomore year of high school. I had always known that I wanted to become a music teacher, but this is the time of my life when I really started discovering my potential in the education community. Students that I have worked with have achieved Superior Ratings in OMEA Solo and Ensemble events, have been part of various honor bands and extra-curricular groups. I have taught private lessons and low brass instrutor for Marching bands. The groups I play in I am the lead trombone so I have a responsibility to teach my coherts the correct rythms, intunation and style. I do recordings for our Jazz band as well as lead trombone. I am the back up director for our jazz band and often work with our director to iron out rough spots in our tunes. Read More

I start beginner's on scales and fundamentals, and once they grasp the basics of reading music and the instrument (hopefully in after a couple of lessons) I have them start on The First Book of Practical Studies so that they can begin to learn to play very simple melodies and to reinforce their ability to read music. Once they are ready I begin to introduce them to more melodical and technical etudes as well as solo repertoire that is appropriate for their ability. Read More

For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result. I love teaching because I believe most, if not all, people love music and can learn to love making music. I want it to be fun for them, to keep them interested. I believe that a set of expectations on the student is required to keep them motivated, but I am never upset or disappointed if they don't practice enough. I think keeping them involved in music is the most important part, and I know that many students will not pursue a full time career in music, but music is valuable to them in so many ways. Read More
