Teaching music is a task for the highly flexible individual. A teacher should be knowledgeable, experienced, skilled in performance and above all, motivating. An instructor should be able to prepare students for many diverse musical situations, strengthen and develop skills and keep the student excited about the music. Private lessons should always cover the basics such as technique, musicality and tone quality. Basic technical skills are an essential element to any lesson. Read More

For young beginners, I start off with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as they are probably already working in this book if they are in bad at school. Outside of that, I'll typically incorporate key beginning excercises from the Arban's Book to help develop the students sound and chops. This was how my first teacher taught me, and I found his methods extremely helpful in my early years. Once they're fundamentals are developed, I will begin to work on the students first recital. I studied with Kevin Puts while earning Masters Degrees in Composition and in Music Theory Pedagogy at The Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. While at Peabody, I was a Graduate Teaching Fellow in Music Theory, taught middle school-age students composition lessons through the Junior Bach program, and substitute taught at the Peabody Preparatory. I have been working with children since I began working with Bar-T Summer Camps in 2007 at age 13. In my second year at Berklee College of Music, I decided to pursue music education. I have always been fascinated in music instruction. I have taught ages 5-18 in many different music fields like composition, arranging, performance, composition and theory. My main instrument is the Alto Saxophone and I have enjoyed playing the instrument on many stages and other performance areas. Read More

My methods vary between each student. For beginning students, that are not learning in a school setting, I typlically start with Hal Lenard's Essential Elements For Band. Once the student had progressed, I will start to introduce solo repetoire that the student will be instested in, which could be pop tunes or other type of music. This will encourage the student's passion for music to grow. If the student is in a school setting, then the student will work on all of the music for school and solo repetoire. Read More

For students just starting out the focus is always on the fundamentals. Hal Leonard has some great Essential Elements books. When students show progress with these types of instruction manuals we'll usually jump to specific pieces of music that focus on the elements that we learned about in our method books. Lessons are tailored to the student and his or her needs and goals. All students aren't shooting to play at Carnegie Hall or tour the World. Read More
