I always start with getting to know the student and identifying his or her goals. What is the objective? From there, we will map out how we are going to get to that point. Most students' goal is to learn songs, so we will begin by identifying what those songs are. I will then figure out what skills are needed to play those songs, and we will start learning those skills at the most basic level possible, gradually increasing complexity until you have the ability to put those skills together and start rocking out! With all of my students I am kind, patient, gentle, humorous, encouraging, and positive with my feedback. Students regularly give feedback on the music they are making, as well as any new ways they think I might be helpful to them. I use Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory to help inform me of the students learning style. My goal is to nurture each students musical process. I support whatever pace students choose to employ, and tailor my instruction to their needs and wants. Read More

The first lesson I ever gave was my junior year of high school. It was to a younger student down the hill at the middle school. A trombone lesson. At that moment I knew I wanted to teach. I typically use Steve Hedrick's Band Fundamentals book with beginners. If a student is currently enrolled in a band program, I am comfortable using whichever method book their teachers has selected. I gradually begin to introduce solo repertoire and creative activities such as composition and improvisation. With more advanced students, I will typically use a "cornerstone" book from the literature pertaining to their instrument. For example, trumpet players will use the Arban's book and trombone players will use the Bordogni book. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet, Music, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
For students of all ages I use a combination of the student's own personal experience with music along with trumpet specific brass pedagogy to achieve a student's personal goals. One of the first discussions we have is what kind of music the student likes/dislikes, what kinds of music they've performed and/or studied, and what their individual goals are as a musician. From there we collaborate to tailor a custom plan for the student; parts of this plan include a warm up routine and practice schedule, short term and long term goals, frequent listening suggestions and aural analysis, and repertoire and projects that are tailor made to be applicable to a student's interests.
