My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. Speaking from experience, a student learns best at their own pace. With private music lessons, it is a lot easier to identify what skills a student is good and as well as what needs to be worked on. When working with a new student, I like to hear what they have, so that way I can determine what I need to work on with said student. I teach piano classically by reading music and patterns. As we progress, sometimes the student gets disinterested. At that point, I introduce the chord method as well as the number system- having them play certain progressions as I prompt them to play.
