My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. I started teaching trumpet lessons as a senior in high school, and continued on through college and into my professional playing career. I have taught students interested in the genres of jazz, classical, and modern music, and value all 3 genres equally. I have found teaching students all 3 styles simultaneously is beneficial as all these styles present different challenges and techniques which ultimately provide students with a wide variety of opportunities whether they are beginning, intermediate, or advanced players. I want new students to have fun and learn things that are interesting to them and benefitial to their musical journey. Children should get their beginnings in technique books and eventually music that stimulates further growth and interest; and adults, like the kids, importance is placed on technique, but even moreso, good practice techniques! As adults we quickly lose patience and revert to bad habits when it comes to practice, and that slows growth, develops poor technique and narrows our abilities to only what we currently know.
