I am an enthusiastic and versatile musician that has been learning and expounding upon my knowledge for over 18 years. I am from Tallahassee, FL, in which I am currently based and have attended high school (James S. Rickards H.S. c/o 2012) and college (Florida A M University) where I studied Music Education. For beginners I teach the fundamentals such as found in the Rubank Elementary Method for Trumpet. I stress accuracy, correct breathing, and tone development. I try to stress the importance of daily practice. I encourage my students to enjoy making music, and never to be discouraged. I'm a professional trombonist, specializing in the fields of orchestral classical music, and also avant garde contemporary music, and improvised creative music. I was the first trombonist to graduate with a BM from the Colburn School, an intensely rigorous, professional level orchestra, and conservatory, I had the opportunity to work with the Ensemble Modern one of the premier European new music ensembles, and Frank Zappa's self proclaimed "last band".  In 2014, I graduated from the California Institute of the Arts,  where I studied composition, experimental music, and improvisation, and focused primarily on developing my own style of live electronics and improvisation via the trombone. My methods are based on what I have personally tried and proven to be beneficial. The three main methods I find to be extremely important are the Arban book, and the Clarke technical and characteristic studies. In addition, I've found equally important the Earl Irons long tone and flexibility exercises. I like to find out what the student is most interested in a tailor the practice regiment accordingly. My methods definitely vary depending on the level and experience of the student. However, the fundamental exercises and order of warming up is very similar throughout the different levels of experience. It would start with long tones, then we would move on to lip slurs, then scale exercises and after that we would love on to music and etudes. For beginners I would work on embouchure technique and figure out what works best for them, and at the same time is also efficient in improving. Read More
