Prior to my appointment at Coppin State University, I taught High school for 14 years, Elementary and Middles school for 4 through out the state of Maryland. Ever since high school, I have enjoyed teaching other students. In college, I would travel to nearby schools to tutor middle and high school instrumental students. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. My teaching experience starts 6 years ago when I started teaching marching band in Douglasville, Ga. I marched baritone with Spirit of Atlanta in 2013 and 2014. As time progressed, I started to teach music with local schools through Georgia State University and private connections as either a section coach or a private instructor. My private studio, with brass students, has been running for about two years now. Setting realistic goals is the best way to approach teaching private lessons. Being that I will only see a student, on average once a week, I tend to be honest and realistic about expectations and goals. I like set goals that are somewhat challenging but very attainable through motivation and fun.
