I find music has two important aspects to emphasize, reading and understanding music theory on sight, and hearing and interpreting music. For reading and music theory at it's most basic level I use books like Arban's method. This book contains scales and patterns that are easy to digest for someone learning to read music while also building up the intricate brass technique needed for all brass instruments. For hearing and interpreting I use simple excercises to start like having a student play back a simple line I play to them or have them identify what kind of scale it chord I just played. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
My passion for the trumpet has come from developing my skills through a disciplined focus on mechanics and fundamentals. In middle school most of my development came through trial and error with a transition to private lessons my junior year of high school. I have found that a majority of young trumpet players approach the instrument in a fashion that hinders their progress. By training a student to shift from a "pressure" to a " compression" mindset they are able to use the air stream to reach their range, power and flexibility goals. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet, Bass Guitar, Double Bass
I have found that for musicians at all levels, especially beginners, exploration is key. Learning an instrument is like building a relationship with that instrument and discovering what sounds you can create together. I use this guided discovery as a tool for discussing technique and musical ideas. Once enough fundamentals are grasped, I introduce repertoire which will lead to a recital performance. I always keep in mind the specific interests of the student and work towards meeting their individual goals. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn, Tuba
For beginning students, I typically work out of basic method books used in band classes, like the Standard of Excellence series. With more experienced students, I utilize standard brass methods, such as the Arban Complete Trombone Method, the Bordogni/Rochut Melodious Etudes, and the Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies. With all of my students, I customize a daily fundamentals routine tailored to their specific needs with various exercises to help solidify each student's technical fluency. Read More
Instruments: Piano, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, French Horn
My teaching is student-centered. Teacher demonstration leads the way for any student on any instrument. Students are encouraged to set long-term goals and short-term goals. Students are encouraged to be stakeholders in their own development and their own future. Students are encouraged to listen to as many other artists as possible. Success is not a point of arrival, but a process. My experience at the Peabody Institute prepared me as a performer and as a teacher. Read More
