I will start youbg beginner students with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As the student progresses, I will introduce solo literature appropriate for their skill level. For older beginners, I will assess their interests in order to keep them interested in their new instrument. For students with more experience, I will assess their skill level and assign exercises to further develop their fundamentals, and assign literature to grow the student's repertoire that will also reinforce their strong points while strengthening other points in their playing. Most schools use the Hal Leonard Essential Elements and I tend to focus on this method as supplemental instruction but other methods are fine as well especially if the student is already working through a particular method book. For young students I encourage a mix of formal music instruction with music the student enjoys. Nothing unlocks a love of learning like discovering how your favorite music works!
