I create my own lesson plans (and some materials) specific to each student. Some standard books I use are Alfred's Drum Method book 1, The New Breed, Portraits in Rhythm, The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary to name a few. The books are necessary for developing music literacy, however I remind students that the pages don't make sound!!! Developing a discerning ear is paramount in my approach. Most teachers use a Hal Leonard beginning book. Essential Elements (EE) is popular, as well as Accent on Achievement. I'll be using EE for beginners. I drill ear training, and will have the student memorize simple songs to beginning not only increasing their repertoire, but a fun way of practicing scales.  Before this, I taught elementary school-age children in summer camp, was a lead teacher at a preschool for children ages 1-5, and taught solo French horn students from local high schools throughout my college career.  I have had success with all age groups, using my skills to break down the toughest musical passages into simple and easy-to-understand instruction. My teaching experience has been a part of my life for over 12 years starting with my leadership in my high school band specifically with brass instruments. I continued to pursue music education in college where I developed varied techniques and approaches to a variety of instruments through my time spent with some great teachers that identified my challenges and helped me to overcome them. My experience has always been with beginners and earlier musicians, but my tenure in Avery County has given me more experience with intermediate and advanced players that have auditioned and performed in All-District and other Honors Bands throughout North Carolina.
