Most people don't want to be super competitive, but many are talented to do so. Most people are in music for the overall enjoyment of it, and some realize friendly competition is a win-win. My teaching experience sates back to running trumpet sectionals (in Junior High High School) for an All Star Jazz Band in my home town. When I was 16 I started teaching younger trumpet students as well. I descovered early on that I had a passion for directing and teaching. This stayed with me, and I always have incorporated education into my directing and leadership styles as a perormer. As a Musical Director for Royal Caribbean I would regularly have to teach an hour long show to my international band in under an hour and a half.I know that learning an instrument is hard work and that motivation is key to success. I find that with music technology growth is exponential. I strive to have a positive and friendly relationship with students. Respect of eachother is also important. I teach each student uniquely and do not stick to a "cookie cutter" approach. Everyone has unique physiology and strengths and weaknesses, so each person should be taught according to their specific characteristics. I also try to explain playing processes and ideas clearly to ensure comprehension. I often use analogies, comparisons, and visuals to make teaching concepts more clear. Read More
