For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements; as well as other, more auditory practices that do not require a book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other solo repertoire pieces that I feel the student is ready for, and assist in musical execution for future recitals. For adults, I try to first find out what the student is interested in, and then guide my lessons in such a way that would be beneficial for their goal, as well as their musicianship. Read More

For children my teaching style is very reward based, I love stickers so always give them one once they've mastered their song for the week and such. Lots of encouragement and positive feedback and working through the difficult things in a positive manner. For adults I will teach based on you! This is a great, simple and streamlined approach to developing instrument technique and music reading skills. In addition to Pearson, I use my own lesson plans and materials which are primarily informed by the H.L. Clarke method. For intermediates and above , I use the H.L. Clarke, James Stamp, and J.B. All of my students follow more or less a similar path that deviates a bit once they have developed some. No matter the age I start all students off with building fundamentals of tone, flexibility, articulation, and range. I use a combination of exercises from David Vining, UNC's own Buddy Baker, and Emory Remington. While building fundamental playing skills I will have students begin playing etudes. Younger students will start in their band method books, but as time goes on they will transition into Rochut's Melodious etudes, and the Rubank method books. Read More
