Speaking from experience, a student learns best at their own pace. With private music lessons, it is a lot easier to identify what skills a student is good and as well as what needs to be worked on. When working with a new student, I like to hear what they have, so that way I can determine what I need to work on with said student. For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice.
