For beginner students, I focus heavily on fundamentals consisting of breathing, mouthpiece buzzing, long tones, slurring/tonguing exercises, and scales. I will require each student to learn at least 1 new scale each week once we've established our individualized curriculum. For more intermediate/advanced students, fundamentals are still a must, but we will also begin more challenging repertoire such a solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts, and various other advanced studies depending on the student's level. For the beginning and intermediate trumpet, cornet, alto horn, baritone, euphonium and bass student, we will use Arban's Complete Conservatory Method. The speed of progress will depend on the students basic knowledge of musicality. For the beginning and intermediate trombone student, I have my own teaching plan as well as Blazhevich's School for Trombone in Clefs. Again, the speed of progress will depend on the students degree of musicality. For 23 years, I have taught instrumental music in the public schools in New York State, as well as private lessons. Although I teach all styles of music, at lessons, I focus on music of students choice. I have coached numerous rock bands at the local youth center.
