For students who are serious about learning I believe a goal-oriented approach is the best, having a certain level or certain piece to try to reach by a specific time. Accomplishing this goal and seeing the results from working through the steps needed to learn a piece is very rewarding. This leads to new goals and the motivation to learn and accomplish even more. Once the basic foundation is in place the learning will become easier and the students' enjoyment will increase. Read More

I have taught privately for the past five years. My students have ranged from eleven years old to college-age students in their late teens and early twenties. I love teaching for many reasons. I see a student as not just a musician, but as a complete person. Each student is very different, and I want to help them find their voice and their ability. My students have placed in honor bands, including the West Tennessee Solo and Ensemble Festival, and in this competition have won first prizes for both ensemble and solo competitions. Read More

For beginner students, I love the Faber primer or Alfred Beginner. Once the students have learned the basics, I play for them several pieces they would want to play for the next recital coming up so they can have an idea of what they like. For Intermediate players, I love the Dozen a Day collection, Hanon, and Alfred books. For teenagers and adults I really want to know specifically the type of music they love and want to play whether it be classical, jazz, pop, RB, etc. Read More

I have seen my students achieve success at all levels, from being a beginner to winning a college scholarship to the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music! I have taught pre-K through adult instrumental and vocal music. I have taught Jr. High and High School Band. I presently am teaching in Gibson County as a part time public school music teacher since I retired from full time service over 2 years ago. (I just couldn't stay away from it!) Since I started there, I have also been hired by the high school band to be one of their brass instructors. Read More

I generally try to understand the fundamentals as to where the student is at currently. The basics are always where we drill the most. Playing the fundamentals must become like second nature as all the advance stages of playing and performing would always be difficult. Besides having a good grasp on the fundamentals, it is always important to find out what the student is interested in and the direction emphasis that the student / student's parent wants to get to of music lessons.
