I find that they provide a good breadth of repertoire suitable for students who are new to their instruments. For violin and viola lessons, I start my beginning students off with the violin/viola instrument hold as well as the bow hold. Once one has gotten the feel for holding the instrument as well as the bow, I teach the student the open strings of the instrument, followed by a one octave scale, with basic note reading exercises. I find a great sense of joy in my students developing a passion for music much like my own. I began teaching privately as a high school student, working with begnning students at the middle school. I have taught privately in my home and in students' homes since graduating from college. Regular practice is very important and something I emphasize with my students. I like to include a mixture of classical and modern music in my lessons, so that students enjoy what they are learning and playing. If a student does not enjoy their time playing their instrument, they will not want to put the practice in and lessons will become a point of argument.  Read More

I start every student with basic terminology for the instrument. I work on bow technique and instrument technique very early on, I believe every student wants to play as soon as possible. Music should be fun and as such, if a student is not enjoying lessons anymore I do not push and leave the option to end up to the student and parents.
