Beginner Violin/Viola/Cello/Double Bass- I typically start in a class method book like essential elements or something similar, and move out of that book into etude books with music that pairs well with them, before moving onto things that are more student chosen once they can play well enough to play things that they like. Beginner Piano- I use the Leila Fletcher books because they are set up at a good pace, and work through those, adding in music that a student wants to learn as we go. Read More

I believe the most important goal in learning to sing is to use a healthy tone production free of tension. This is true no matter what style of music the student wants to learn. I use my own exercises, written on manuscript paper that is tailored to the students needs, but always includes exercises for breathe control, relaxation and proper resonance. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing my students flourish. My students will often come to the first lesson worried about their ability and leave with more than a grin on their face because it was not at all what they were expecting. I use a variety of methods for my teaching style. I usually have a few method books that I bring to a first lesson, and after meeting the student I will decide on the best one. Once the student has progressed and shows some motivation to be slightly challenged, I'll introduce "popular" music so that the student feels a sense of accomplishment! Music is associated with movies, radio, etc., so to be able to play something recognizable is exciting for the student and the teacher. Read More
