Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music! Therefore, it is important to approach each student individually, adjusting my teaching methods to them personally. This ensures that the student progresses at their own pace. Most importantly, I encourage their progress by setting proper goals and acknowledging their accomplishments which makes students eager to learn more. Making progress is the goal for both me and my students, and we work together to make that possible. Read More

My teaching style is full of open communication. I think that it is important that students set goals for themselves. I allow my students to pieces that they want to play. I teach traditional Appalachian/Old Time and Irish fiddle in a fun, learn-by-ear style that's pretty accessible to anyone beginning or more advanced. As a lifetime fiddler player and music historian, I provide a cultural and and musicological background to a wide array of folk traditions in the U.S. and throughout the world. I have a flexible approach to teaching, and can work with classical notation and sheet music, in addition to playing by ear and improvising. Read More

My only method in teaching violin is the suzuki method. Suzuki based his approach on the belief that Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited. Children learn to speak by listening and imitating the spoken language they hear around them. Read More

I also find that performing can give students a sense of accomplishment and seeing their peers perform can be inspiring. I usually host two recitals yearly. The student may perform solo or with a pianist. I have also helped many students prepare for auditions. Read More
