A student will develop a loving connection with music under my study, whatever that music may be. More foundational technique learning such as practicing certain scales, arpeggios, etc. will be evaluated. Many students have different preferences for their practice and may want to structure it differently than how is commonly taught. I make it vital to make practice something that can be enjoyed while also being a puzzle or challenge just enough to make the student want to keep going, learning things on their own that I can guide them along. My belief is that performed music should be fun for the performer as well as the audience. I will always give my best effort when I teach but students are also required to put in effort if they want to learn and become passionate about music. I encourage my students to have regular practice routines but make sure they are not overwhelmed. When I teach I also like to ask my students questions (such as how much bow do you need for this note? or what is the best approach to make this phrase more expressive with your left-hand?) so that students can learn to come up with solutions by themselves and can feel comfortable practicing without my always being there to guide them. For beginning students, I usually teach with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements books starting with book 1 to book 3. Once they are comfortable, and progression is recognized, I will introduce Suzuki Violin School. Not only do I solely focus on the music, I give students hand and bow exercises they can do during lessons or while just sitting at home watching TV. I also recommend that my students practice in the bathroom while at home because of the natural acoustics it provides. Read More
