When I teach, I emphasis consistent practice along with the enjoyment of the music my students are learning. Ages 5 to 10, I focus more on memorization of skills and hand coordination, over an understanding of theory. Ages 10 to 14, we focus on theory and mastery of skills. For beginning students, I use the first Essential Element book to introduce the first instrument and theory concepts. Once students have progressed past this book, I use the Tune a Day series along with the accompanying scale book. This book introduces students to solo and duet pieces worthy of a recital performance. Once they have reached the third book and are progressing through etudes, students begin working on individual solo repertoire pieces. Read More

I believe in individualized learning. So each student will receive their own plan for their progression. Some materials I recommend for students are the rubank book for beginner. It is very important for students to grasp the fundamentals. For intermediate students, we would progress on a track and focus on what they had for goals. For advanced students we could use anything from method books to cds to ear training and transposition to bring out the best in the learner. Read More
