Not only do I teach students how to play or create music, but also how to successfully set goals and achieve them. Every musician should have a goal in mind when practicing. Learning how to manage that goal can be tricky. I like to work together with students to take their goals and break them down smaller into more manageable pieces for them to master. I give Suzuki violin, viola and cello lessons. I also use classical method with scales, etudes and solo pieces in my teaching as another option. With fiddle students I use Ann Wheeler method books. My piano students use Faber piano series. My Guitar students use Hal Leonard guitar method and guitar song collections. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. My teaching style revolves around guiding each student through the mental process of developing one's music skills, both in a technical and musical sense. I believe everyone is capable of becoming a fantastic violinist, as long as they are shown what to focus on and what to look out for in their own relationship with the violin. Often, students are thrown into the deep end and asked to swim. I am more concerned with teaching each of my students how to observe themselves so that they can make adjustments and improvements based on their own assessments of themselves, rather than just telling each student what to do.
