I try to introduce my students to different styles and genres of music. Their repertoire ranges from dances and songs to variations, concertos and sonatas. In order to be able to play such an array of genres, one requires what I like to call a "laboratory of skills". During my time at Oberlin I took a certification class specifically about string pedagogy. I am very well versed in various methods of technique training for all instruments in the violin family. With beginners I teach in a modified Suzuki method that includes music reading after a few months. In general I focus on technique and then add in the more fun musical gestures. I graduated from Bowling Green State University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education, with a focus on Euphonium. I have worked as a long term sub in middle school band and have taught privately since that time. For example, if a child is beginning on the instrument for the first time and looking to play in the school music programs, I will start with a few different method books and focus on technique (while incorporating various puzzles and games of course!) On the other hand, there may be someone who has previously played and may just be looking to learn some of their favorite songs.
