I began teaching music at the age of 15, primarily guitar and piano lessons for beginners ages 7-14 in my hometown of Parker, CO. At 16 I began teaching my students basic music theory and intermediate instrumental instruction. I moved to Boston in 2012 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Songwriting from Berklee College of Music in Boston, still actively teaching throughout my curriculum. I have now taught over 200 students ages 4 to 64 a wide variety of music-related subjects, including: piano, guitar, bass, voice, music theory, D.A.W. and notation software, and contemporary songwriting. I taught private guitar lessons continuously, while in highschool and college. In between engagements in my performing career, I would always return to teaching. In 1992 I was certified by Dr. L Scott Martin, Phd from Juilliard, to teach vocal performance at his Academy of the Arts in Denver, and I have continued to the present, to coach young singers to express themselves with music. I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books. I have had a lifetime of performing, recording, teaching music! I studied piano, then violin, then became a singer songwriter in the 80's and 90's. I have performed at weddings, bars, nightclubs, conferences and churches. I began teaching in the 2000's and have enjoyed passing on the skills and the experience of learning music to my students. As beginners, I recommend the first Hal Leonard Essential Elements Band books with EEi. The EEi feature allows students to access online features that coordinate with their private lessons and enhance their ability to learn. As students progress through the book, I add solo repertoire to the student's EEi account so they can both hear it played and record their own performance of each work of band music. Guitar students start with Essential Elements, piano students begin with Piano Adventures/Adult Piano Adventures, and both offer interactive online components which enhance the student's resources and ability to practice and learn between lessons.
