While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. I played keyboard on the worship team for several years and some youth students showed interest so I would teach them every now and then.
