I've been teaching guitar for the past 12 years, and more recently bass, ukulele, piano/keys, voice, percussion and studio recording as well. I move at a very quick pace, but I have my students set their own goals. While I will select the literature for the student, I want them to feel successful when they are working with me. I want students to be confident and successful, so I will do anything in my power to help them learn good technique and practice habits. I do my best to cater to each individual students needs.  For younger beginning studetns, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or whatever materials they are using in school.  For all of my students, even the more experienced ones, I work on building fundamentals and extending techniques.  Fundamentals are an essential cornerstone to build all other aspects of music upon.  Also from the very start of lessons, I like to have the student working on actual music, whether it be a simple song or more advanced solo repertoire, the goal of these lessons should be to better make music and have fun doing it! I teach through positive reinforcement and encouragement with a set structure that allows for discipline and certain benchmarks that can determine success and mastery of certain skills. I truly believe that when students are nurtured and given a comfortable space they will excel as creating music and art is vulnerable and requires the student to let go.
