After developing habit-building exercises, my intent as a teacher is to find the balance between encouragement and challenge that each student needs to grow. My goal is to develop and cultivate an excitement for musical practice by helping them discover their own musical style and sound. For beginning students, I typically start with a Sound Before Symbol Method. That is, we learn to get to know the instrument before adding sheet music and theory. Every student's learning track is individualized- So if you want to learn pop music, I will arrange that for the flute! If classical is what you are interested in, I will bring in the Bach Partitas. For children, I do not use books or complicate bibliography to teach. I encourage children to discover music through their own curiosity. Using historical imagery and references of the natural world that surrounds us, is very effective way to help children understand music. Art contains emotion and intellect, so, my intention is that the kids explore that knowledge in a fun and joyful way. For adults, the teaching process is more focus to expand their abilities.
