Some methods I would like to include in my teaching are introduction/development of IPA, which is International Phonetic Alphabet. The International Phonetic Alphabet is crucial for knowing how to sing correctly in a variety of langauges. I have experience singing in English, German, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish. For all students initially, I like to have them bring me the repertoire they want to sing. Because I believe that healthy singing comes from the heart, I want my students to sing the music that brings them joy. While there is place for assigned repertoire at a certain point in time, it's important for a student to approach singing with the healthiest mindset possible. In the first few lessons, I may not even touch repertoire if I feel that the student needs more work on easing up their instrument and discovering the sensations that work the best for them. My method is to build a solid repertoire list in whatever style of music the student prefers, and then work to a clear understanding of the characteristics necessary to sing in that style. I love having conversation with students to get to know them and find ways the music can relate to them. It also helps me make my teaching more relatable to them. I try to give all my students at least one piece of classical music to broaden their horizons and also to use the techniques they are learning in a different way. Read More

When I think of teaching, I think of how rewarding it is to get to know each student and their families. I encourage parents to stay in the lesson (not required). There is so much to learn and see. I started playing guitar at age 8. In my formative years I studied with various instructors around central Indianapolis until mid year of '85. Upon this time I studied a full year with James Lee Thorpe whom eventually played, toured recorded with Sweet F.A. They released albums with MCA Chrysalis Records.
