For beginning students who are children, I always start with the basics of reading music. For piano, I make sure they build the skill sets in their fingers and are able to find the notes as they play them. The same concept goes for ukelele. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, they can then be introduced to solo repertoire. At the beginning of my experience with each student, I assess what the goals are for each student/their family, in the musical learning process. I base my teaching on that, within the framework of standard music teaching practices. Throughout the process of the student's learning, I periodically assess, not only the student's progress, but also the student's satisfaction with their learning process.
