I have been playing drums for over 20 years since the age of nine, and have been playing guitar, keyboards, bass as well as singing for 10 years. I started teaching music at Werlein's for Music, which if are from New Orleans, and of a certain age, you will remember as being the premier music store in the Greater New Orleans area. I taught at Werlein's up until they closed their doors when they finally went out of business. I've seen the face of an 80 year old grasping the ukulele and finally getting to hear himself playing his own songs, and seeing the glow in his eyes like a child. When you set realistic goals and set what steps are going to get you there, all the while celebrating each little victory, every lesson depends on the needs of my student. For children who want to play violin and piano, I start with the suzuki method and try to find some music that they will identify with, like disney music or the soundtrack to frozen. For children who want to play guitar, I start by teaching them the essentials in person and giving them notes to practice from (Names of strings and chords, strumming patterns and music reading).
