Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. Institutions include Washington National Opera at The Kennedy Center, Maryland Lyric Opera, Washington Concert Opera, Chautauqua Opera Company, Aspen Opera Theatre Center, Opera Camerata of Washington, The In-Series Opera, The Virginia Consort, Maryland Opera Studio, Washington Opera Society, Juilliard Opera, Central Maryland Chorale and President's Residence at University of Maryland. I teach basic theory, breathing techniques, microphone technique, sight reading, movement for the stage, scales, and varied genres of music. studio training, acting skills for the singer, performance coaching, voice-overs and vocal improvisation utilizing traditional vocal technique. I have started teaching shortly before college, and have a proven track record of working as an independent instructor and part of teaching collectives. I am a member in good standing with both MTNA and MSMTA, and have been consistently teaching students out of my home studio for the past 15 years. With younger students, I prefer emphasizing habit formation, such as setting a practice schedule, regularly committing to a set amount of practicing time, and develop a passion for the piano. When I work with children, however, I focus primarily on ear training and music theory, knowing that those skills will help them out so much more as adult musicians than prematurely trying to learn advanced techniques. In voices lessons with children, I limit my technique-talk to breathing and vowels. (Of course, for those kids who have no concept of what their head voice is, we work on that, too.)Other than that, we focus heavily on solfge, learning to read music, developing a sense of rhythm and internal pulse, and other musicianship skills.
