I always begin a lesson with having the student play a song/piece of their choice, so that they can feel confident and comfortable in their own skin and in the lesson space. For wind instruments, long tones and scales will occur at the beginning of the lesson, and will be followed by study of an etude and/or piece of repertoire. I began teaching while I was in college to young band students who had never before picked up an instrument, whether it was the keyboard or the oboe. This required teaching not only the technique of the instrument but also foundational musicianship. I also worked consistently with other college-aged students while they completed their piano skills courses, as well as the younger oboists in their technique courses and reed making classes. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with a Minor in Violin performance from Concordia College and a Master's Degree in Specialized K-12 teaching from Capella University. My main instrument is the violin, however I am well versed on teaching all string instruments and also teach beginner and intermediate piano.
