For young beginners, I like to use Alfreds Basic Piano Library books. The songs inside are simple, fun, and are a great introduction to piano and music theory! For older beginners and more advanced students, Ill use Piano Adventures and The Piano Bench of Classical Music. Ill also throw in a favorite theory and technique book according to students age. For beginners, we start at the very beginning, learn how to hold the instrument and bow. Surprisingly, this first step can ruin or really hinder a person's technique down the road if it needs to be corrected. For each of my student's lessons, I have them play for me their pieces from the lesson book and their scales and arpeggios. At the end of the lesson, I take a few notes for the student so they know what to focus on or fix for their pieces, as well as keep track of which key they are working on for their scales. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Violin Method (Viola version available) with occasional ear training with the piano with the Kodaly method. For intermediate and advanced students, I introduce a variety of etudes, scale books, and solo repertoire, e.g. Carl Flesch, Kreutzer, Mazas, Dont, Dounis, and Unaccompanied Bach, etc. For viola students or violinists who are looking into doubling the viola, I introduce many techniques including Karen Tuttle and Primrose Scales to help along with the transition.
