Im a friendly, hardworking musician who loves to help students learn to create music to the best of their ability. Ive worked professionally as a pianist and accompanist since 1992, and have also had the opportunity to work as an actress on shows for ABC, Showtime, TBN, Inspiration Network, and major film studios. These experiences have enhanced my ability to teach students how to perform at all levels, even when the stakes are high. Read More

I have been experiencing the love of playing and performing music for 40 years and still find it challenging to this day. Music is a journey of the senses which can open and expand our minds. For the first 11 years of my musical journey, I journeyed hours and hours in the discovery of the rhythms, notes and expression but I journeyed in solitude. What a wonderful joy wasawaiting me when I discovered how much fun it was to make music as part of an ensemble or as I like to think of it, a team.A musical team can be a band, an orchestra, a chorus, a churchchoir,a quartet, ora duet, and in all cases it is exhilarating to make music with other people.I hope that I can guide and encourage my students to learn to enjoy this journey that can provide a life time of adventure, social interaction and creativity. I was brought up learning the Suzuki Method of Piano. This method has its benefits, but I also utilize other methods such as Faber's Piano Adventures or Clark's The Music Tree. Developing a good ear is essential when trying to express yourself musically. Piano technique is also essential when trying to execute what you want at the right moment. With an emphasis on technique and listening, I motivate my students to also read the music and to interpret the only source that is made available to them. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My philosophy is to practice, practice, practice. Read More

We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfreds book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music theyre interested in learning. I like to gear my warmup exercises and cool down exercises towards that style and I always put aside a few minutes at the end to work on whatever music they desire. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For optimal practice results, have your own, dedicated space, a quiet area that is always semi set up for music making. Keep hydrated especially if you are a vocalist or wind player.
Establish a routine. It could be something as simple as: warm ups, buzzing if you are a brass player, scales and arpeggios, followed by an etude and or method book work, then solo. Practice while standing and sitting. Move around as you play or sing.
Always have a reason for repeating a phrase or section of your piece. It could be to work on steadiness of a difficult run, a tricky fingering, or to increase the tempo, or intonation etc. Mindless repetition can be a fruitless exercise so it is important to practice mindfully. Have short term and long term goals for each practice session. Keep them simple. Avoid always starting back at the beginning of the piece.
With our busy schedules it is hard to always practice at the same time each day, but at least, schedule some time each day, for practice.
Even a brief practice session is better than none at all! Say to yourself, "I am only going to practice 10 minutes today". it's less daunting, easily achievable. Once you get started, it probably will develop into more!
When will I start to see results?
You should begin to see results from your lessons immediately. Of course, the more you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Results do not magically happen, but if you are taking lessons, and playing at home and at school, you will see results. Guaranteed.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My clarinet teacher in high school inspired me to become a music teacher. She was a consummate professional, opened my world to a myriad of musical opportunities and demonstrated how to teach with a humanistic style. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and modeled how to be serious about music making, while retaining that sense of wonder and joy.
In an era when most music directors were male, she stood alone as a female conductor, had a full time teaching load and managed her lovely young family. She basically did it all, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Later, I had three wonderful children, four grandchildren and an exciting career in music ed.
