I began teaching when I was in college, teaching piano lessons to students in the community. Since then, I've taught in every church I've been a part of, and at several studios in the larger community. First and foremost, I believe that learning music should be fun! While I strive to encourage excellence, students should enjoy what they are learning. My students are encouraged to practice regularly and participate in public performace, be it studio recitals or in other venues. I was taught that sharing music is just as important as making it! I have given lessons and studied a variety of pedagogical methods. Each individual is different and in order to keep the student motivated, a successful teacher needs to emphasize the importance of learning while never compromising the enjoyment one can get from the piano. I have taken piano pedagogy courses at Carnegie Mellon University and Belmont University. While in Pittsburgh, I served on the faculty of the Pittsburgh Piano Academy. Read More

The methods I choose fora studentwill be individualized based on wherethat student is and wherethe studentwould like to go. I will select different methods for different kinds of learners. However, we will certainlybegin by looking atthe student'sinstrument and learning environment and evaluate the technique and knowledge of the student. We will also begin by discussing long term goals and setting clear short term goals in ear-training, sight-reading, performance as well as theory and composition. The keyboard is a great place to learnmusical fundamentals, especially for beginners because it is so easy to visualizeintervals and patterns. What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For optimal practice results, have your own, dedicated space, a quiet area that is always semi set up for music making. Keep hydrated especially if you are a vocalist or wind player.
Establish a routine. It could be something as simple as: warm ups, buzzing if you are a brass player, scales and arpeggios, followed by an etude and or method book work, then solo. Practice while standing and sitting. Move around as you play or sing.
Always have a reason for repeating a phrase or section of your piece. It could be to work on steadiness of a difficult run, a tricky fingering, or to increase the tempo, or intonation etc. Mindless repetition can be a fruitless exercise so it is important to practice mindfully. Have short term and long term goals for each practice session. Keep them simple. Avoid always starting back at the beginning of the piece.
With our busy schedules it is hard to always practice at the same time each day, but at least, schedule some time each day, for practice.
Even a brief practice session is better than none at all! Say to yourself, "I am only going to practice 10 minutes today". it's less daunting, easily achievable. Once you get started, it probably will develop into more!
When will I start to see results?
You should begin to see results from your lessons immediately. Of course, the more you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Results do not magically happen, but if you are taking lessons, and playing at home and at school, you will see results. Guaranteed.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My clarinet teacher in high school inspired me to become a music teacher. She was a consummate professional, opened my world to a myriad of musical opportunities and demonstrated how to teach with a humanistic style. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and modeled how to be serious about music making, while retaining that sense of wonder and joy.
In an era when most music directors were male, she stood alone as a female conductor, had a full time teaching load and managed her lovely young family. She basically did it all, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Later, I had three wonderful children, four grandchildren and an exciting career in music ed.
