There is nothing more rewarding for me than the "lightbulb" moments. To see a student light up with excitement over the satisfaction of knowing he or she has been able to achieve or conquer a concept or a piece of music is so awesome for me. I love helping students travel the process of going from point A to Z. I love the challenge of inspiring students through the difficult times when it would be easier to just give up and quit. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More

I want my students  to succeed in their studies with me. I will reflect and make accommodations so that my students will understand the concepts  I am teaching. I want the student to be engaged so we will explore their interest so that they can apply to the style of music that they want to perform. With that in mind, they will be able to read music and play by ear. Read More

The methods I choose fora studentwill be individualized based on wherethat student is and wherethe studentwould like to go. I will select different methods for different kinds of learners. However, we will certainlybegin by looking atthe student'sinstrument and learning environment and evaluate the technique and knowledge of the student. We will also begin by discussing long term goals and setting clear short term goals in ear-training, sight-reading, performance as well as theory and composition. The keyboard is a great place to learnmusical fundamentals, especially for beginners because it is so easy to visualizeintervals and patterns. For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. After we work through the example together, I will have them try playing it alone and if a particular area needs to be fixed I will address it, make sure the student understands, and move on from there. I started teaching in high school and fell in love with it. After college I moved around a bit and spent time developing playing by ear. Now I am settled and loving teaching! I really strive to develop a fun relationship with my students (especially the younger ones) because nobody is going to practice if they aren't having a good time at the lesson! Lessons with me are stress free and full of laughs and scales. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For optimal practice results, have your own, dedicated space, a quiet area that is always semi set up for music making. Keep hydrated especially if you are a vocalist or wind player. Establish a routine. It could be something as simple as: warm ups, buzzing if you are a brass player, scales and arpeggios, followed by an etude and or method book work, then solo. Practice while standing and sitting. Move around as you play or sing. Always have a reason for repeating a phrase or section of your piece. It could be to work on steadiness of a difficult run, a tricky fingering, or to increase the tempo, or intonation etc. Mindless repetition can be a fruitless exercise so it is important to practice mindfully. Have short term and long term goals for each practice session. Keep them simple. Avoid always starting back at the beginning of the piece. With our busy schedules it is hard to always practice at the same time each day, but at least, schedule some time each day, for practice. Even a brief practice session is better than none at all! Say to yourself, "I am only going to practice 10 minutes today". it's less daunting, easily achievable. Once you get started, it probably will develop into more!

When will I start to see results?
You should begin to see results from your lessons immediately. Of course, the more you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Results do not magically happen, but if you are taking lessons, and playing at home and at school, you will see results. Guaranteed.

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My clarinet teacher in high school inspired me to become a music teacher. She was a consummate professional, opened my world to a myriad of musical opportunities and demonstrated how to teach with a humanistic style. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and modeled how to be serious about music making, while retaining that sense of wonder and joy. In an era when most music directors were male, she stood alone as a female conductor, had a full time teaching load and managed her lovely young family. She basically did it all, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Later, I had three wonderful children, four grandchildren and an exciting career in music ed.
