I absolutely love seeing my students really learn their new techniques and music! I am a very patient person and definitely allow each student to learn at his / her own pace, encouraging them to know each technique in several different ways, to truly have a good understanding of not only what they are playing, but how and why. I am a stickler for lots and lots of practice (what else? ;-) ), but honestly you or your student will only learn piano by practicing consistently. Read More

While there, I tutored several classmates in musical theatre, taught private piano lessons, and worked with several classmates on their voice pieces for our recital at the end of each semester. As the only student to play piano and have a classical background in voice, I was the go-to-guy when people needed help. After graduating, I worked as a choreographer for a local community theatre, I taught gymnastics (former gymnast of 8 years), and continued to work with students and friends in both voice and piano. While Alfred's method also teaches position playing, it also dives into intervallic reading. Many true, albeit arranged, baroque, romantic, and classical piano pieces are featured without a lot of fluff and fanfare. This may be an ideal method for most of students. The Alfred method is featured in a variety of books, including an all-in-one piano course for children, a prep course, and a basic piano library, completely correlated and presented in progressive levels. Testing each category to see where the student's. Strong point are. After which I will be able to make lesson plans for them to follow even out side of the class. I began teaching private voice students while I was still working on my Masters degree. I was the Concert Choir section leader in College and found leadership and spreading my love for music to be exhilarating! I encourage all of my students to set a reasonable practice schedule to get themselves into the habit of practicing and really reaching their full potential as a student. I accept recreational students as well as students who are looking towards a career in music in the future. Read More

I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For optimal practice results, have your own, dedicated space, a quiet area that is always semi set up for music making. Keep hydrated especially if you are a vocalist or wind player.
Establish a routine. It could be something as simple as: warm ups, buzzing if you are a brass player, scales and arpeggios, followed by an etude and or method book work, then solo. Practice while standing and sitting. Move around as you play or sing.
Always have a reason for repeating a phrase or section of your piece. It could be to work on steadiness of a difficult run, a tricky fingering, or to increase the tempo, or intonation etc. Mindless repetition can be a fruitless exercise so it is important to practice mindfully. Have short term and long term goals for each practice session. Keep them simple. Avoid always starting back at the beginning of the piece.
With our busy schedules it is hard to always practice at the same time each day, but at least, schedule some time each day, for practice.
Even a brief practice session is better than none at all! Say to yourself, "I am only going to practice 10 minutes today". it's less daunting, easily achievable. Once you get started, it probably will develop into more!
When will I start to see results?
You should begin to see results from your lessons immediately. Of course, the more you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Results do not magically happen, but if you are taking lessons, and playing at home and at school, you will see results. Guaranteed.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My clarinet teacher in high school inspired me to become a music teacher. She was a consummate professional, opened my world to a myriad of musical opportunities and demonstrated how to teach with a humanistic style. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and modeled how to be serious about music making, while retaining that sense of wonder and joy.
In an era when most music directors were male, she stood alone as a female conductor, had a full time teaching load and managed her lovely young family. She basically did it all, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Later, I had three wonderful children, four grandchildren and an exciting career in music ed.
