I have experience participating in, working with, and conducting college level choirs and I am still gaining experience. I have also passed Piano Proficiency in my undergrad education. This proficiency test covers major and minor scales in all twelve keys in two octaves with proper fingering, playing a piece from memory, sight reading open score (a four-part choral work), and I have had to harmonize a melody using the three basic I, IV, V7 chords in a major key and i, iv, V7 chords in a minor key. I began teaching when I was in college, teaching piano lessons to students in the community. Since then, I've taught in every church I've been a part of, and at several studios in the larger community. First and foremost, I believe that learning music should be fun! While I strive to encourage excellence, students should enjoy what they are learning. My students are encouraged to practice regularly and participate in public performace, be it studio recitals or in other venues. I was taught that sharing music is just as important as making it! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's importat that each student progresses at his/her own pace. I encorage them by setting realistic goals and by reinforcing the improtance of individual study practice. By trying out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. I mainly use Alfred and Hal Leonard books for teaching. Read More

I am enthusiastic about sharing all that I have learned with future students. I have given many different solo and collaborative performances all over the eastern United States. In the collaborative field, I have accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists. I have been the principal pianist in various orchestras and have performed piano in many different ensembles that championed traditional and contemporary works. I have also much experience in performing and studying jazz studies or popular music if this is where the student's interest lies. Read More

Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing. In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I will also encourage singing in my piano lessons to reaffirm the student's aural skills. The Alexander Technique is also something that my students will explore in our lessons. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
For optimal practice results, have your own, dedicated space, a quiet area that is always semi set up for music making. Keep hydrated especially if you are a vocalist or wind player.
Establish a routine. It could be something as simple as: warm ups, buzzing if you are a brass player, scales and arpeggios, followed by an etude and or method book work, then solo. Practice while standing and sitting. Move around as you play or sing.
Always have a reason for repeating a phrase or section of your piece. It could be to work on steadiness of a difficult run, a tricky fingering, or to increase the tempo, or intonation etc. Mindless repetition can be a fruitless exercise so it is important to practice mindfully. Have short term and long term goals for each practice session. Keep them simple. Avoid always starting back at the beginning of the piece.
With our busy schedules it is hard to always practice at the same time each day, but at least, schedule some time each day, for practice.
Even a brief practice session is better than none at all! Say to yourself, "I am only going to practice 10 minutes today". it's less daunting, easily achievable. Once you get started, it probably will develop into more!
When will I start to see results?
You should begin to see results from your lessons immediately. Of course, the more you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Results do not magically happen, but if you are taking lessons, and playing at home and at school, you will see results. Guaranteed.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My clarinet teacher in high school inspired me to become a music teacher. She was a consummate professional, opened my world to a myriad of musical opportunities and demonstrated how to teach with a humanistic style. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and modeled how to be serious about music making, while retaining that sense of wonder and joy.
In an era when most music directors were male, she stood alone as a female conductor, had a full time teaching load and managed her lovely young family. She basically did it all, and I knew that I wanted to follow in her footsteps. Later, I had three wonderful children, four grandchildren and an exciting career in music ed.
