While all of my students study the same fundamental musical principles, I believe that every lesson should be as unique as every person. That's why I always create new, customized lesson plans and provide individualized materials for all of my students. In my experience, this approach is most effective at increasing the student's musical ability—and it's a lot more fun! Rather than just going cover to cover through a method book, we'll keep things interesting and fresh by playing music games (especially with younger students), composing our own music, listening to new artists, and working on pieces that are requested by the student. My teaching experience dates back to college, as I was the Vice President of the collegiate choir, and small group leader for international tours. After that point, I had the privilege of working at the elementary, high school, and collegiate levels teaching voice, piano and acting. I have over ten years of experience as an orchestal conductor and music director for Azusa Pacific University, Cal Baptist University and Life Pacific College. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce a solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

First of all, I would ask the student if music would be his/her career or just a hobby. If it is to be his/her career, my approach would be more theoretical. But if it would be just a hobby like mine, I would encourage the student to learn by ear supplemented with a little theory to be able to learn a musical piece or song in the shortest time possible. I know everyone learns at different speeds so making sure they are comfortable yet challenging is important to me.Being able to know when the student is enjoying and not making it a chore is a key to helping and encouraging a student learn. Watching them progress in their insturment is rewarding in of itself and nothing is more satisfying. As the student starts to see him or herself accomplish each lesson I like to praise, push and encourage to keep on. Read More

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am proud of is my ability to make people turn their heads and focus on me when I start surfing on the neck. Time, trials and experience allowed me to build a musical intuitive fluidity where I handle the instrument beyond mere notes. The guitar is here to tell a story, to smile, scream and cry. This moves people in various ways which I am most grateful for.
I am glad that I never ever gave up on the guitar, on practicing and taking it to the next level. And this, despite difficult times at various stages in my life. The Doors' "Music is your only friend" anthem resonates with those who it profoundly affects inside their heart.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose the guitar as my primary instrument because it is the most versatile instrument by a large measure:
- The greatest reason by a large measure is that the guitar allows for all musical scopes: chords, arpeggios, solos. This allows the musician to become a 1-man band as needed in a variety of contexts: karaoke, live performances, jams, etc.
- In addition, the guitar has an incredible array of sound-altering techniques: bends, slides, hammer/pull-offs, tapping, sweeps, harmonics. All this arsenal contributes to making the instrumental the musician's natural hand extension and a redoutable musical weapon when the right skill mastery is reached.
The guitar also has several pros to be taken into consideration:
- Easily affordable
- Convivial transportation
- Low and simple maintenance (cleaning and changing strings)
- Very large string family (bass, lute, mandolin, ukulele, etc)
- Wide worldwide acceptance: guitar can be used to play literally every single genre in the world and still feel genuine
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
I was a student of world-wide renowned Moroccan-Canadian guitar professor Saïd Laghzaoui. While my standing with him was mostly focused on classical music, he did instill the desire of learning the instrument by understanding it in and out, by taking every musical measure as an entire fragment to be practiced until perfection. Most importantly, he stressed the importance of being self-reliant. This was the main source of inspiration to build my ear training, which then allowed me to learn all the songs on the fly now with little assistance.
