Each student is unique. They require their own method and pace of training. My hope is to help the student reach their goals while still enjoying their time practicing for it. The routine that works best for the student will prove itself over time depending on the student. It may be to work one way for one student but not so much for another student. No matter what age, any starting clarinetist needs to understand the fundamentals of the clarinet. Once these fundamentals are acquired, we move on to the basics of reading music and playing the clarinet such as learning the circle of fourths and practicing pieces of music that is from a certain major scale. Ear training and music theory will also be involved in each lesson to understand music further. Clarinet: Any beginning band method book, Baermann, Klose, Voxman. At advanced levels I will use appropriate repertoire and advanced method books tailored to the student. Saxophone/flute: Any beginning band method book or standard beginning to intermediate woodwind book. Appropriate repertoire. Piano: I use most beginning methods, including Alfred, Bastien, Piano Adventures (Faber), and other standard piano methods. As a product of "the system", I generally teach "the system". By that I mean that in the education system here in Texas has been teaching this same way for years and years. After a year or two learning the fundamentals, scales and phrasing, then one gets to study the Ferling etudes for region band and a few basic solos for solo and ensemble. I have also performed professionally with several bands as well over the past 30 years and currently. For beginners, I like to start with the Rubank method books, which progress pretty rapidly. I also focus on tone production and scales as we move along at the level of the individual student. I gauge the speed at which we move based on the student in question, and prepare a practice routine for each student based on how much time they have to practice each day. For an intermediate to advanced student, I work with more the more advanced Rubank method books, and suggest solo literature appropriate for them to prepare. Read More
