I approach teaching with a fun atmosphere, laid back to be comfortable to ask questions, develop passion for music to allow progress and praise to build confidence so students want to try more difficult music to help build that motivation and eagerness to learn. I always like to use my first lesson as a get to know. Being able to ask students questions on why they choose to play flute, what inspires them to play, etc will allow me to mold my teaching to their wants and needs. Read More

I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree on Vocal Performance, and am currently a second-year master's student pursuing a degree in Vocal Pedagagy. I am aspiring to be an educator in the realm of community outreach, to be on the opera stage, and to produce and record classical, childrens, Christian, jazz and ethno-cultural sacred music. Along with pursuing a career in teaching, I am pursuing positions in the fields of acting and voice-over work, including character voices, commercial singing, and advertising, I enjoy acting, storytelling, inspiring audiences of all ages, and artful expression by medium of the written word. I believe that every student has the potential to succeed. It is my goal as an instructor to guide the student toward their vision of success, whether it be personal, professional, or some mixture of both. Every student should be challenged, but nobody should ever feel as if music is some form of art that is lost on them. I seek to set standards and expectations high to learn alongside the student and to grow, both as people and as musicians, until the point at which they have exhausted my knowledge so that they may one day reminisce with pride and accomplishment on the path that I have set them upon. My teaching style is to observe each students background. I tend to try approach each student with their own "Language" to make them more easily to understand music theory concepts. Just like what I mentioned before, pure music theory is vague to most people; so I do make examples of implied meaning from other field to make the student catch the logic in their own field knowledge. I do supervise my students' physical playing gestures because some physical gestures does effect on playing efficiency. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to the spring of 2004, shortly after graduating from college. Early on in my career as an instructor, I found the best overall approach to teaching was to encourage consistent practice, coupled with a strong emphasis on good technique and developing good habits. Maintaining a consistent lesson schedule as well as continuity between lessons is critical. My experience with teaching has also taught me that as an instructor, you can't always be a disciplinarian.
