I do use some of the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements Series material cause it is consistent and user friendly. I find that it is important to encourage students to play and practice the type of music they enjoy, and to have fun performing and learning. At the begining of a lesson I encourage to start by listening and running through the scales and pieces that we last worked on. Make sure they are all well learnt. Before moving on to more scales and next pieces in the selected order at the beginning of class.
