Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I have been playing piano since age 6 and clarinet since age 10. During my time at university I was taught to play all of the woodwinds, focused on pedagogy and music technology, and achieved many awards and recognition. My clarinet/woodwind pedagogy instructor was a student of Himie Voxman, author of many woodwind teaching method books. My university band was, at that time, considered one of the best in the state of SC, and was invited to play at the state music educators' convention in 2003. Read More

As stated, I have taught students of all ages, from pre-K to adults. I first began teaching while I was in college and have taught ever since. While most of my career has been spent teaching privately in fine arts academies and in students' homes, for the past 7 years I have taught high school choir in Keller ISD. I love to see my students succeed and have those "aha!" moments when their individual practice begins to pay off. Read More

Every person has different strengths, weaknesses, motivators, and goals. I like to keep all of these things in mind before I start designing a lesson plan for each person. I like to make sure that I am teaching both the ear to listen and the eye to read, so I make sure I can improve the development of both by providing effective sight=reading and aural exercises in every lesson. Instruments: Piano Cello Music
I have been a musician almost my whole life, starting out as a singer in a children's church choir when I was five. I started playing cello in the fourth grade through the public school system in California. I am classically trained, but I love all different styles of music. One of my strengths as a string player is improvisation. I have played with many different pop, rock, and folk bands over the years and that's the kind of music I enjoy playing the most. Read More

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Yes. As I previously mentioned, I've had several students go on to become music majors at college. Some making a living at music. And some winning their school's talent contest. I really enjoy my students playing a piece they have written. I encourage composition and teach how to compose, when the student is ready.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Correct fingering is quite important on piano, guitar and bass guitar. On piano, playing two different parts can be challenging. Reading two different clefs can be confusing and difficult to some students. Guitar and bass guitar are initially, painful to play. Hand muscles need to be trained and strengthened. Callouses need to develop.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I am very progressive but I teach to the individual student. All students, and people, are unique, and I customize my lessons to fit the students wants and needs and personality. Other considerations are the students time, and what their goals are with music. Cookie cutter methods don't work for me at all. I've taught several students with Autism, Asperger's, and various learning disabilities, with great success.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I teach my students to 1. Practice shortly after the lesson, so the student remembers the lesson. 2. If they have a problem with a measure or section, to stop, analyze, and fix the part. Break it in to small pieces, and figure it out, and once it is correct, play it over and over to get it in your muscle memory. 3. Just playing through a song, skipping over the mistakes, is NOT practicing or learning.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I have been fortunate enough to have toured the world, several times, with performers of all levels of success and popularity. I have worked, in the recording studio , doing countless recordings, with all types of artists. I've written, produced, and recorded commercial spots, for several large advertising agencies, through the years. I love performing and entertaining people. I also love teaching music. There is nothing like music. I feel that, us older, experienced players, have a duty to pass the torch.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
When I was quite young, I would see an organ or piano, and they always fascinated me. I loved the sound and the fact that the instrument can act like an entire orchestra. I picked up guitar, in college, and then bass. Understanding keyboard and piano, which is music theory laid out in front of you, I was able to teach myself both guitar and bass.
