My background is in jazz and improvisation but have also studied and performed classical, latin, RB, funk and many other styles. For beginning students, I am willing to work with them on the book they are using in school band. I also like to use other flute technique books, such as Rubank, Melodious etudes, and flute duets as well. When the student has developed a confident tone and technique, I will introduce solo repertoire that is at a comfortable level for the student, as well as eventuall getting the student to learn the beauty of collaborating with a pianist or other form of accompanist. I teach the basics of flute playing including how to produce a beautiful tone, how to play with good posture, how to play rhythms and articulations properly, how to sight read and how to play standard flute repertoire. Beyond this though, I believe students who have a firm grasp of how music theory, music history and musical style combine can play with greater musical understanding and expression. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests. I believe that my students should have high expectations and have fun while completing goals. I make sure lessons are fun and progressive. I hold my students to high expectations so when they meet their goal they actually kill two birds with one stone (ex: figuring out a difficult passage in school music while progressing in technique exercises).
