No two students are exactly alike. Studies have proven that we all interpret colors differently, and it is the same for music and how we learn it. Though there are standard commercial methods that will help keep lessons focused, the goal is to find the best and most creative ways to use that information which will help build our understanding of music on a very personal level and not just teaching with a "learn this etude and come back next week" mentality. The most important philosophical concept about private lessons is this: proceed in a way that will maximize your potential to achieve an excellent goal that you can call your own. Although I am not limited to one method book or another, I typically use Arban's for trumpet lessons - with other books and repertoire along with it. My background is Suzuki violin, followed by music literacy and transposition. So, whatever method book we select, we must consider basic furthering of direct musical perceptions, in addition to achievement of stated goals. Read More

My approach is simple: find out what the student wants to gain from lessons with me, and work towards that goal. To do that I try to break the larger goal into simpler ones, so that students can experience the journey of learning something new, and can not only meet their goals but exceed them and walk away with something they can enjoy for the rest of their lives. While in college, I began tutoring fellow music students in the areas of guitar, songwriting, music production, and music theory. It was during this time that I realized how fun and rewarding it is to have something I say "click" for the student that encourages their love for music! After college, I started teaching younger, beginning students, and am now looking to expand my teaching to all levels and ages. Read More

For beggining students in guitar or piano, I would have them start with a basic beggining book such as something by hal leonard. With guitar I will teach basic chords and go from there to working on songs. Scales and chords will be a big part of beggining work in these instruments. As for Saxophone, I will usually begin with scales and long tone work- the later being something extremely important. Read More

I began teaching bass in high school to elementary and middle school students. In college, as my knowledge of music theory expanded, I began teaching guitar and voice as well. Students need not be able to read music to study with me, although if we begin a professional relationship, know that I use much theory and classical techniques in all styles of playing on both guitar and bass. I'm currently teach jazz music the most, but I have found that covering more styles as a teacher reminds me of how connected the world of music really is and I'd love to get back into teaching rock, classical, funk and other styles of music. I gave my first private lessons for guitar while I was a sophomore in high school! A few of my friends always wanted to learn to play and I gave it my all to try and teach them! What I gained from that experience was that nobody learns the same way, so I've kept that as my teaching mantra for the past decade! I have been professionally teaching for the past 3 years, but have been teaching and tutoring for the past 10 years. Read More
