These include breathing, posture, and mouth position.These fundamentals stand students in good stead to sing whatever style they choose for the rest of their lives. There is nothing more rewarding then to see a student achieve and accomplish a goal. I believe and always positively affirming and acknowledging there accomplishments. Positive reinforcement and encouragement always assist the student to strive and succeed. I always give my student the choice to decide between multiple pieces, but I always choose pieces with a new technique or concept, so the student is consistently learning. I always ask my students what their goals are, both short and long term. This then gives me a good outline of how I expect our lessons to go. My biggest goal is not just for my students to grow and progress but also to have fun! We sing because we love it, and it gives us joy to do it and share it with others. I began studying voice prior to college with world renowned teacher, Helen Boatwright in Syracuse, NY. This training was classical. Loving jazz, I started also to sing with Dianna Spradling at Syracuse University. Soon after, I decided to go to college for musical theatre at The Boston Conservatory where I continued my studies with Walter Boyce and Robert Honeysucker, both of whom used a more classical technique. During the first lesson I have the student sing (if it is a vocal lesson) their favorite song so I can hear them. After that i use my keyboard and take the student through some excersizes to really home in on that range. I listen for qualities and we discuss the positives and what improvements are needed. After the first lesson we choose music: a classical art song book and theory book of my choosing, and a songbook of the student's choosing. Read More
