Upon a student's evaluation every lesson with any student should form it's own branch or life of it's own. Music is a passionate expression. I help students understand their instruments. Self expression, individualism, and self composition are traits I sought as a student and musician. My joy as a teacher, instructor and mentor is seeing the excitement someone achieves when they finally feel the "got it" or are starting to connect the dots. Read More

I like to challenge my students when I feel they should be. I also try very hard to showcase them whenever possible to show the community the great talent that is amongst us. I would have to say my main approach to teaching is figuring out what works best for each individual student, seeing as though everyone learns differently and at different paces. Forcing a student to learn something when they don't want to is something I do not allow, I can only encourage but not force. Read More

For piano, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures Series; however, I am open to other method books as well. The Faber series has theory, technique, lesson, and performance books, each with different skills and techniques to learn. I find that those books offer the most comprehensive learning. In addition to the Faber books, I also utilize online worksheets for supplemental learning. For guitar, I typically use online worksheets and chord sheets, and from there, I encourage students to purchase specific guitar books they are interested in (for example, Disney books, classic rock books, Beatles books, etc.). I believe in teaching music that the student wants to learn, whether that's the latest pop song or basic music theory which can be applied to any style. For my piano students, I prefer Alfred's piano curriculum. For my guitar students, I use Hal Leanord books. For my voice students, we work on whatever songs they want to learn or have assigned to them for a performance. For flute, I like Rubank method, but am open to other preferred methods as well. I started to teach private piano lessons since 2008, I have almost 8 years piano teaching experience. Back to my undergraduate days, I was running my home studio for 5 years in Beijing. I obtained my Master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Ball State University. As a graduate assistant during my Master degree, I taught students in one on one lesson and group piano class of various ages and levels. In my lessons, I always try to explore students talents and help them to grow their passion on music in each lesson. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I decided I was going to become a professional musican shortly after graduating high school. Singing is something I feel strongest at, and something I truly love. There hasn't necessarily been a defining moment for me, yet, but I know that I have the capabilities to become a professional musician, whether that is in opera or as a singer/songwriter, which I love as much as opera.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes, music does run in my family! My mom was practicing voice in college for a bit, and sang all through her childhood, but decided against it. She still has a lovely voice! My sister is a great singer, as well, but decided to pursue something different. My dad and brother can sing as well. I have some family members who are professional musicians. My second cousin is a famous jazz composer, and I know that my grandpa used to be in a band! I have a lot of music-loving people in my family!
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I have a lot of interests outside of music as well! I love writing, theatre, dancing, and working with kids. I think teaching primary education, choreographing dances, or acting would be what I would be doing if I wasn't a musician.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite style of music to sing is either musical theatre or opera. I love musical theatre because of the acting display and the deep emotions that go into the music. I love opera because that is where my voice seems to flourish the most, and there are a lot of beautiful arias out there!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My music degree is in Vocal Performance. I chose that degree because I would love to become a performer at some point in my life. I love singing in any style classically, as well as musical theatre styles and even rock and roll. I thought this degree would give me a breadth of knowledge I can use. It helps me lay the healthy foundation for any style of singing, similar to how ballet is the foundation for any style of dance. So, if I end up becoming a rock singer, I will know the healthy way to do it.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream piece to perform is probably the role of Rosina in The Barber of Seville. I sang an aria from the opera in my senior recital, called "Una voce poco fa" and I absolutely love it. To actually get to sing her role professionally would be a dream come true!
