There are several different method books that I like to use with my students based on age, knowledge/experience, and of course if the method book they use is something they will enjoy; it's very difficult if a student doesn't like the book they're using so I try to give them options. For beginners, I like to use John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course or the Schuam method books. For additional practice and work, I like to use Schaum's Fingerpower and have the student write out the notes then recite them aloud while playing the exercise. Read More

In my time as an instructor, I have not used any particular method book in my lessons. I will buy a notebook for each student where all important information from the lesson will be recorded. I write charts and exercises myself using tablature or standard notion depending on the student. As music being such a cumulative concept, I like to not only focus on pedagogy, but music theory and aural skills as well. Read More

I have been teaching for 30 years. The exciting thing is that private music lessons provides an opportunity to get to know students on an individual level. This means that each lesson is unique, and each student has lessons tailored to them. Getting to know what makes a student tick or understand is a highlight of my day! They often laugh at me because I have to ask what they are doing, and that I don't know off the top of my head because there are so many different things my students are doing. Read More

As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music. If my students do not leave every lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and wanting to practice and play music, then I am not doing my job. Just as I tailor each lesson to match the individual student, expect the student to grow and develop as a musician at his/her own pace. Ultimately, music is universally accessible and I want to foster a love and appreciation for listening to music as well as performing music. Read More

I teach Wunderkeys to pre-schoolers ages 4 5. This method gives them a head-start in math as well as patterning. I start beginner piano students (ages 6 and up) with Faber's Piano Adventures. I introduce intermediate students to Alfred's Premier Piano Course as this method starts them on solo repertoire. I find out what adult students are interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep them engaged. If my students are not having fun, then I'm not doing my job! Read More

For piano, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures Series; however, I am open to other method books as well. The Faber series has theory, technique, lesson, and performance books, each with different skills and techniques to learn. I find that those books offer the most comprehensive learning. In addition to the Faber books, I also utilize online worksheets for supplemental learning. For guitar, I typically use online worksheets and chord sheets, and from there, I encourage students to purchase specific guitar books they are interested in (for example, Disney books, classic rock books, Beatles books, etc.). I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. During lessons, I always have students work on some form of scale, sight-reading, and ear training. I have several duet books (and a Disney book!) that students love to sight-read from. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I decided I was going to become a professional musican shortly after graduating high school. Singing is something I feel strongest at, and something I truly love. There hasn't necessarily been a defining moment for me, yet, but I know that I have the capabilities to become a professional musician, whether that is in opera or as a singer/songwriter, which I love as much as opera.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes, music does run in my family! My mom was practicing voice in college for a bit, and sang all through her childhood, but decided against it. She still has a lovely voice! My sister is a great singer, as well, but decided to pursue something different. My dad and brother can sing as well. I have some family members who are professional musicians. My second cousin is a famous jazz composer, and I know that my grandpa used to be in a band! I have a lot of music-loving people in my family!
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I have a lot of interests outside of music as well! I love writing, theatre, dancing, and working with kids. I think teaching primary education, choreographing dances, or acting would be what I would be doing if I wasn't a musician.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite style of music to sing is either musical theatre or opera. I love musical theatre because of the acting display and the deep emotions that go into the music. I love opera because that is where my voice seems to flourish the most, and there are a lot of beautiful arias out there!
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My music degree is in Vocal Performance. I chose that degree because I would love to become a performer at some point in my life. I love singing in any style classically, as well as musical theatre styles and even rock and roll. I thought this degree would give me a breadth of knowledge I can use. It helps me lay the healthy foundation for any style of singing, similar to how ballet is the foundation for any style of dance. So, if I end up becoming a rock singer, I will know the healthy way to do it.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
My dream piece to perform is probably the role of Rosina in The Barber of Seville. I sang an aria from the opera in my senior recital, called "Una voce poco fa" and I absolutely love it. To actually get to sing her role professionally would be a dream come true!
