It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Once these students have grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire appropriate for their first solo recital. I've spent seven years in public schools in the surrounding Houston area before coming on to teach with KIPP Houston Public Schools in 2012. For beginner students, i typically like to work with the tried and true Suzuki books, as well as theory practice with Essential Elements for violin, and the Faber books for pianists. I will begin to introduce solo work as skills build, but we will always be working on something that the student genuinely is interested in. For adults/ intermediate or advanced students i try to find what the student is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons fun and engaging while also slightly challenging to further understanding of technical abilities. There is nothing more inspiring and rewarding than watching a student grow. For that reason, I meet students where they are. After an initial assessment of knowledge and skill, I began tailoring lessons for each student individually depending on their skill level. Typical lessons would include a relevant theory mini lesson, teacher playing demonstration, and teacher guided practice.
